GAWD Drops ‘Cathedral City’: A Heavenly Soiree of Sound
In the realm of spirituality, where the Christian deity is often depicted as an otherworldly force, far removed from human form and earthly limitations, it's only natural that we seek to shape our understanding of the divine in our own image by molding our perspective into something more relatable. Some envision a benevolent male figure in the heavens, while others explore a more feminine viewpoint, acknowledging the vital role of women in the miracle of life itself.
But now enters the chat, R&B duo known as GAWD, who have skillfully woven their own unique narrative into this age-old tapestry. Short for, “Good Ass Women Deserve,” the group dropped their debut album Cathedral City on September 5th and kicks off with an opening track, “Damn, You’re a Girl”' that sets the record straight and perhaps seems to nod to one of their musical inspirations — Outkast. The album features hit singles like “Two Hot” and their latest release, “NVM,” where they boldly proclaim, “I get what I want…I do what I want,” a proclamation that applies not only to their lyrical content but also resonates in the physicality of their sound.
GAWD's Cathedral City, a ten-track masterpiece produced by Stanley Randolph, blends house and R&B vibes that hit you right in the feels. The result is a sonic experience with a creamy texture that feels nothing short of divine and served as the guiding light for the project's concept and musical direction. As they put it,
“All the music we began to make sounded very heavenly with lots of reverberated harmonies that sounded like it was recorded underneath the high ceilings of a cathedral.”
This project is an ode to existing as nuanced beings, in all areas of sound and celebrating their experiences unapologetically.
As Cathedral City unfolds, GAWD emerges as the lead characters in a story that fearlessly embraces their imperfections, complexities, and the ever-evolving journey of self-discovery. This project, a testament to authenticity in music, showcases an abundance of raw musical talent that's as undeniable as it is enchanting. Be sure to stream their album below and check out their upcoming performance at Rhythm and Vibes in Los Angeles on September 23rd.
